If you're unfamiliar with Make Music Day, it is a music festival that encourages musicians of all ages, genres, and ability levels to get out, perform, and enjoy music in their communities. It started out in France in 1982 and has since grown into an international community organized event. It takes place annually on June 21st.
You can find more information about Make Music Day at makemusicday.org/about and about Cincinnati's involvement at makemusicday.org/cincinnati.
Ally Oakes has been organizing community events for Make Music Day since 2023. Past events have included student recitals, performances by Ally, performances by local bands, food trucks, cotton candy, and snow cones.
Ally is excited for the opportunity to host this year's event at the Delhi Event Center and continue to add to the roster! We will still have everything mentioned above with the addition of an Instrument Creation Station, Community Sing-Along, and Community Recital.
This is reserved for students who learn from me. They're the whole reason I ever got involved with Make Music Day to begin with, they work really hard, and this is their time to shine!
Taking private lessons?
Used to play music in high school, but haven't had the chance to perform since then?
Currently playing music at school and want a chance to perform over the summer?
The community recital is for you!
Show off your mad skills in the Community Recital! We're hosting a recital featuring any members of the community who would like to participate! All ages, genres, and ability levels are welcome to come perform! At this time, there is a limit of two songs per performer to keep things moving along. Solos, duets, and other small ensembles are welcome to perform!
Sign ups are due by June 7th and can be found at the widget below!
Anyone is welcome to come by during the performances to create an instrument! Instruments will be yours to take home and you are invited to bring them back to play during the community sing along!
Lead by members of Happy Tuesday, this is a family friendly sing along. Lyrics and chord symbols will be distributed via QR code for anyone who would like to sing and play along!
Instruments are encouraged! Bring your guitar, unpicthed percussion instrument (including from the instrument creation station), or any other instrument that you know how to play!
Please note, there will not be sheet music, only chord symbols, so instrumentalists who do not know chords can just play the root note of the chord (example - if it says "C" over the words, play a C.)
Anyone who would like to perform for more than a couple of songs is welcome to sign up as a Featured Performer. Featured performers can be anyone including, but not limited to bands, solo performers, and musicians wanting to lead a group activity,
Featured Performers should plan to play for around 30-60 minutes, but other lengths can be accomodated upon request.
You may sign up at the link below or on the Make Music Day Cincinnati website. If you choose to sign up on the website, please still fill out the sign up form so I can add you to the schedule and marketing materials!
I'm Ally Oakes and I have been playing violin since 2007.
I started out in 4th grade in my school orchestra and I was TERRIBLE! I never practiced and pretty much just faked it until one day, for whatever reason, I decided the day before one of the spring concerts in 6th grade that I needed to know how to play the music, so I practiced a ton that night, learned the music, and discovered how much I loved practicing and learning music.
I started private lessons towards the end of 7th grade and just never really stopped. I was concert master of the lower level orchestra at Oak Hills High School my freshman year and concert master of the upper level orchestras by my sophomore year.
After teaching sectionals throughout high school, I went on to get my Bachelor of Music in Music Education from UC's College-Conservatory of Music (CCM).
After a brief stint teaching music in public schools, I realized that my true passion was teaching private lessons. I had taught private lessons throughout college and alongside my work in the schools and nothing beats the love that I have for mentoring my students and getting to watch them grow in their skills and as people.
I'm very lucky to be able to earn a living teaching private lessons and small groups.
I also love playing with friends and taking gigs playing in weddings and pit orchestras for musicals!
My students come from a wide variety of ages, ability levels, and backgrounds. I have taught students as young as 5 and as old as students in their 80's and 90's ranging from beginners all the way to very advanced students.
I'm still working on the final headcount, but as of right now, there will be students ranging from age 10 through retirement age playing a variety of music including some songs from the Suzuki books, some pop songs, and a concertino movement.
